ARBOK (1940)
SOURCES:
"John Carter and the Giant
of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs
DESCRIPTION: "The tree reptile launched itself straight for the hated man-things...A huge claw knocked him lying on the ground with the great fangs at his throat." ("John Carter and the Giant of Mars")
NOTES: The arbok lives in the rare forest of Mars. Its fangs are venomous.
HISTORY: This ill-defined
monster shows Burroughs love of word-play. Arbok is Kobra backwards. The
name was taken for a Pokemon in the 1990s. It only appeared once in the
first chapter of "John Carter and Giant of Mars", one of the most controversial
of Burroughs' stories. For many years it was considered a fake, but its
history was revealed to be a genuine Burroughs written for Whitman's Big
Little Book series by Burroughs and his son, John Coleman Burroughs, who
illustrated the book. ERB sold a lengthened version to Amazing Stories
in 1940."
