THE BALROG (1954)
Hildebrandt's version is very demon like.
SOURCE: The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954)
DESCRIPTION:"......" (The Fellowship o the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien)
Gandalf and the Balrog fall
NOTES: The Balrog is one of the ancient earth elemntals from the time of Morgoth in the First Age of Middle Earth. It is wholly evil and is sent to Moria to capture the ringbearer. It fights with Gandalf for days and days, finally dying by his sword.
John Howe's version
HISTORY: The Balrog fight is classic and the highlight of The Fellowship of the Ring. It is actually based on Norse mythology when Loki leads the frost giants against the gods over the rainbow bridge Bifrost. Tolkien used the images for his own purposes of course.
