THE SPECTRE AT 32 ------- STREET (1868)

SOURCE: "Nothing But the Truth" (Temple Bar Feb 1868)  by Rhoda Broughton

DESCRIPTION: "...There he was, standing in the middle of the floor, rigid, petrified, with the same look--that look that is burnt into my heart--of awful, unspeakable fear on his brave young face. For one instant he stood thus; then stretching out his arms stiffly before him, he groaned in a terrible, husky voice, 'Oh, my God! I have seen it!' and fell down dead. Not in a swoon or in a fit, but dead." ("Nothing But the Truth" by Rhoda Broughton)

NOTES: The spectre of fear that inhabits the upper bedroom at 32 ----- Street is never described. The maid sees it first and goes insane. She is sent to an asylum and will not speak of what she saw. When a brave young soldier, who fancies the daughter of the household, goes into the room he also sees it and falls down dead. No explanation is ever given of what caused the spectre other than the house has an evil reputation.

HISTORY: Broughton, the niece of J. Sheridan Le Fanu, knows her tools well. She knows the unseen, merely hinted, is much scarier than anything even partly glimpsed.
