BUBOTUBERS (2000)

SOURCE: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling (2000).

DESCRIPTION: "...here he was distracted by Professor Sprout showing the class the ugliest plants Harry had ever seen. Indeed, they looked less like plants than thick black giant slugs, protruding vertically out of the soil. Each was squirming slightly, and had a number of large shiny swellings upon it, which appeared to be full of liquid..." (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling)

NOTES: The Bubotuber is a leech-looking plant that produces great quantities of pus. This white liquid is used by Madame Pomfrey to treat acne and pimples.

HISTORY: Rowling seems to be having fun inventing the most disgusting creature possible. It's not surprising that something so much like a great zit would be produce a cure for acne. The name is a combination of "bubo" for a sore as in Bubonic plague and "tuber", the root of a vegetable like a carrot.
