THE CHILDREN OF ENOCH (2004)

SOURCE: The Arcanum (2004) by Thomas Wheeler
DESCRIPTION: "In the glow of the candlelight, Abigail's tearstained face rose up from between two enormous wings of silk-white feathers. They twitched nervously even as they enfolded naked Abigail like a vast blanket..." (The Arcanum by Thomas Wheeler)
NOTES: Abigail is the last of the Children of Enoch, a tribe of angels left on the Earth when all the others went to heaven with God. These creatures are immortal if not killed but can be slain by weapons. Paul Caleb and Darian deMarcus kill the children and use their wings to make demons. The Children of Enoch survived for millennia on earth, disguising themselves as humans.
HISTORY: The tribe of Enoch are desired by everyone as evidence that God is real. The novel takes place in 1919 after the WW1 and many had lost faith in religion (while others looked to Theosophy and Spiritualism for answers.) Wheeler's angels don't seem too powerful, winged but human for the most part.
