SOURCE: "The Wolf" (1889) by Guy de Maupassant
DESCRIPTION:
"The
beast, with bristling hair, the back arched, awaited him, its eyes gleaming like
two stars."
PLOT:
Two brothers who love to hunt set out to kill a wolf
that has been terrorizing the neighborhood. The older brother dies when he strikes
his head during a fierce hunt. The younger brother props up the dead brother's
body then kills the wolf before him. The surviving brother has been driven insane.
WEREWOLF FACTS: The
wolf in this story does not appear to be supernatural, only larger and more cunning
than regular wolves.
INTERESTING
FACTS: De Maupassant uses the werewolf
myth to give his wolf an air of superiority to other wolves. He is not actually
interested in werewolves at all. He is fascinated with insanity, which he died
of himself.
