"Exile of Atlantis" (Fragment) by Robert E. Howard (Circa 1928?)

Originally appeared in King Kull 1967.

Plot: While still living in Atlantis, Kull and two friends are returning home from a hunt to find a woman is being burned at the stake for marrying an outsider. Kull takes pity on her, casting his dagger into her heart before fleeing.

Monsters: None.

History: This fragment was entitled "Exile of Atlantis" for the Lancer first edition of Kull and used as a short introductory story before Kull has already become king of Valusia. The story offers some information about the Atlanteans who are stone-age savages, who use wooden chains. Kull feels no respect for their bloody religion for he was a foundling raised by tigers in the forest before he was rescued. There are only hints as to who were his original parents, a strange lost race from Tiger Valley. This unusual origin embodies Kull's disregard for convention as well as elder magic.

"Exile of Atlantis" was adapted and drawn by Barry Smith in Savage Sword of Conan #3 (December 1974).

It was adapted again in a longer story called "A King Comes Riding" from Kull and the Barbarians #1 (May 1975) (Pages 14-17) Adapted by Roy Thomas/Drawn by Ross Andru and Wally Wood. It appears peppered through later comics as well.
