THE FLYING-DRAGONS (1957)
SOURCE: Star Born (1957) by Andre Norton
DESCRIPTION: "...This was just the type of land to harbor flying dragons. And while those pests were small, their lightning-swift attack from above made them foes not to be disregarded." (Star Born by Andre Norton)
NOTES: The flying-dragons of Astra are smaller, winged relatives of the Snake-devils. The flying-dragons usually hunt during the daytime. The humans kill them whenever they encounter them, considering them a plague. The flying-dragons act as scavengers, picking the bones clean of dead animals. Their water-resistant hide is used by the humans of Homeport and the Free Folk.
HISTORY: These creatures may have been inspired by Leigh Brackett's Leshen of Venus in stories like "The Moon that Vanished"(1948).
