GIANT BIRD (1931)

From the Conan the Barbarian comic version that borrowed the plot then turned him into a dinosaur.

SOURCE: "The Gods of Bal-Sagoth" by Robert E. Howard (Weird Tales, October 1931)

DESCRIPTION:"...The thing that pursued the fleeing girl was neither man nor beast. In form it was like a bird, but such a bird as the rest of the world had not seen for many an age. Some twelve feet high it towered, and its evbil head with the wicked red eyes and cruel beak was as big as a horse's head. The long arched neck was thicker than a man's thigh and the huge taloned feet could hvae gripped the fleeing woman as an eagle grips a sparrow...." ("The Gods of Bal-Sagoth" by Robert E. Howard)

NOTES: The giant bird is probably a dimatria or some other prehistoric bird such as the Dyal of Pellucidar. The giant bird can kill with a kick of its leg.

HISTORY: The prehistoric bird in this story was probably inspired by H. G. Wells' "Aepyornis Island" through Edgar Rice Burroughs.
