GIANT CROCODILE (1981)

SOURCE: "King Crocodile" by David Drake (Whispers III, 1981)
DESCRIPTION:"The water sluiced over the bony scutes of a head more than a yard long. Behind it, the whole length of the crocodile was breaking surface. Its tail was bent in a flat S which shot the body forward faster than the boat could have been rowed to escape. Khati saw the flaps which had closed the nostrils flare open as the snout raised. The beast's gums were white except for the dark mottlings where leeches writhed among the great teeth..." ("King Crocodile"by David Drake)

NOTES: The eight foot croc is controlled by Nef-neter the priest of Sebek by a pair of magic rings. It is an normal animal is everything except its size.

HISTORY: This story could have been another stupid giant monster story but Drake brings in a lot of cool Egyptian history and a great scene where the hero, Khati, is trapped in the den of the monster and digs his way out. See also Drake's giant shark.
