GOBLINS (1937)

The stupid-looking goblins from Rankin/Bass's 1978 cartoon

SOURCE: The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (1937)

DESCRIPTION:"...Out jumped the goblins, big goblins, great, ugly-looking goblins, lots of goblins, before you could say rocks and blocks..." (The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien)

NOTES: The goblins in Tolkien are more organzied than in folklore. They have a leader called the Great Goblin who gathers them into armies to fight the elves and dwarves. They are sometimes called "orcs" but later in the Lord of the Rings there seems to be a difference between them.

HISTORY: I really liked Peter Jackson's version of the goblins in the Mines of Moria. They had a scuttling, insect-ness to them while still being goblins.
