MEPHITIC IMPS OF NATHAIRE (1934)

Nathaire's mephitic helpers

SOURCE: "The Colossos of Ylourgne" by Clark Ashton Smith (Weird Tales, June 1934)

DESCRIPTION: "Then, in obedience to a dreadful formula spoken by the dwarf, two of the familiars, who had the shape of enormous and shadowy beasts, approached the body of Le Loupgarou and that of Brother Theophile. One of the foul demons, like a vapour that sinks into a marsh, entered the bloody nostrils of Le Loupgarou, disappearing inch by inch, till its horned and bestial head was withdrawn from sight. The other, in like manner, went in through the nostrils of Brother Theophile, whose head lay weird athwart his shoulder on the broken neck..." ("The Colossus of Ylourgne" by Clark Ashton Smith)

NOTES: Nathaire the dwarfish sorcerer uses both human acolytes and supernatural demons or imps as helpers. In the illustration above they are facing off with two priests, by repossessing dead bodies to attack them with. Nathaire's helpers die or become trapped when the giant they creates lies down in a self-made grave with everyone inside a basket on his back.

HISTORY: Averoigne is a demon-haunted land.
