INFERI (2005)
SOURCE: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling (2005) .
DESCRIPTION: "...a dead man lying face up inches beneath the surface: his open eyes misted as though with cobwebs, his hair and robes swirling around him like smoke...the surface of the lake was no longer mirror-smooth; it was churning, and everywhere Harry looked, white heads and hands were emerging from the dark water, men and women and children with sunken, sightless eyes were moving towards the rock: an army of dead rising from the black water." (Harry Potter and the Order of the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling)
NOTES: The Inferi are the resurrected corpses used by dark wizards as their slaves. Voldemort uses them to guard one of his six horcruxes in a subterranean lake. When the waters of the lake are touched the Inferi rise to claim the victim, to drown them and swell their ranks. Dumbledore destroys the Inferi using a fire spell.
HISTORY: The Inferi are reminiscent of Tolkien's undead humans and elves in the Dead Marshes, though they get up and move around a lot more. Can we just call them zombies?
