THE KANAMITS (1950)

Tommy Soloski's version
SOURCE: "To Serve Man" by Damon Knight (Galaxy Magazine, November 1950).
DESCRIPTION: "The Kanamit were short and very hairy--thick, bristly, brown-gray hair all over their abominably plump bodies. Their noses were snoutlike and their eyes small, and they had thick hands of three fingers each. They wore green leather harness and green shorts, but I think the shorts were a concession to our notions of public decency. Their garments were modishly cut, with slash pockets and half-belts in the back. The Kanamit had a sense of humor, anyhow.'" ("To Serve Man" by Damon Knight)

Richard Kiel as the Kanamit
NOTES: The Kanama come to earth bearing gifts: a machine that produces cheap energy and another that stops all explosions. War and hunger are over and the human race embraces the Kanama, who say they can make humans taller, stronger and cure diseases like cancer. People start going off to the Kanamit homeworld for 10 year sabbaticals. One translator gets a hold of one of their books and begins to figure out their written language which is made up of ideographs like Chinese but more complicated. He translates the title as To Serve Man. It's a cookbook.
HISTORY: One of the classic Twilight Zone episodes (March 2, 1962), Richard Kiel who played Jaws in the James Bond films, was the now tall Kanamit sans pig-like looks. Lloyd Bochner, a Canadian actor, did not say those classic words, (though he would in Naked Gun 2 1/2) but Susan Cummings did:

"IT'S A COOKBOOK!"
