THE LANDWHALE (1998)
SOURCE: A Hunger in the Soul by Mike Resnick (1998)
DESCRIPTION: "We were less than four miles out of Fort Capstick when we came to a herd of Landwhales, huge herbivores some twenty feet at the shoulder, with thick, layered, brown skin. They were grazing placidly, and paid no attention to the vehicles..." (A Hunger in the Soul by Mike Resnick (1998)
NOTES: The landwhales stampede when one of the expedition members pointlessly shots and kills a mother landwhale. It's calf is abandoned by the herd.
HISTORY: These creatures remind me of a whalelike land creature in John W. Campbell's "The Tenth World".
