LUNAR FROGS (1923)
SOURCE: The Moon Maid (Argosy All-Story Weekly, May 5 1923) by Edgar Rice Burroughs
DESCRIPTION: " We already had seen evidences of life of a low order, both reptile and insect, or perhaps it would be better to describe the latter as flying reptiles, as they later proved to be -- toad-like creatures with the wings of bats, that flitted among the fleshy boughs of the forest, emitting plaintive cries..." (The Moon Maid by Edgar Rice Burroughs)
NOTES: The frogs of the Moon are winged creatures that aren't edible for humans.
HISTORY: Burroughs makes his lunar world short on animal life, especially edible animals, since he wants to create a world of fierce competition between the Va-gas and Kalkars. The two intelligent species on the planet are also the only sources of protein!
