MARTIAN CHILD (1953)
SOURCE: "Mother By Protest" by Richard Matheson (Fantastic, September-October 1953)
DESCRIPTION: "Ann has a Martian in her womb!" ("Mother By Protest by Richard Matheson)
NOTES: Ann Collier gets pregnant after seeing a UFO which transfixes her with a beam of light. Her husband is away doing research in the jungle. He returns to find his wife pregnant and insistent she has not been unfaithful. While pregnant the baby can control its mother, making her eat copious amounts of salt, read books on a wide range of knowledge, and sleep in the bitter cold. The Martian can reduce its size to safeguard its host. Coffee makes the Martian child drunk. The transplant fetus contains the consciousness of a grown Martian, the first of an invasion force coming to take over human fetuses.
HISTORY: Matheson wrote this story four years before John Wyndham's classic The Midwich Cuckoos (1957) which was filmed as Village of the Damned.
