THE MARTIAN RIDING BEAST (1954)

Steve Ferris' version of the riding beast

SOURCE: "Mars Minus Bisha" by Leigh Brackett (Planet Stories, January 1954) and earlier stories

DESCRIPTION:"There was only a single rider, mounted on one of the big scaly beasts the Martian nomads use as the Earthly desert-folk use camels." ("Mars Minus Bisha" by Leigh Brackett)

NOTES: Unlike terrestrial lizards, the Martian riding lizard does not seem to be affected by temperature. They can be ridden at night.

HISTORY: The lizard mounts of Mars are a probable inspirations for the Dewlaps from Star Wars.

Dewlap or Martian riding beast?
