THE MERMAN (1967)

SOURCES:
"Out of the Deep" Magazine of Horror, November 1967 (though written 30+ years earlier)

DESCRIPTION: “He lay there writhing and then was still, and already had begun to change...I bent and tore the human clothing from the thing. And the first gleams of the sun fell upon a slimy and moldering mass of seaweed, from which stared two hideous dead eyes—a formless bulk that lay at the water’s edge...” (“Out of the Deep” by Robert E. Howard)

NOTES: Howard's merman is not the creature of a Disney cartoon but an evil mass formed from the ocean's natural substances like seaweed. In this Howardian version the creature is much in the same line as a Hodgson weed man.

HISTORY: This story was adapted in comicbook form in Conan the Barbarian, illustrated by Val Mayerik.
