(Frazetta)
SOURCE: The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954)
DESCRIPTION:"Immediately, thought everything else remained as before, dim and dark, the shapes became terribly clear. He was able to see beneath their black wrappings. There were five tall figures: two standing on the lip of the dell, three advancing. In their white faces burned keen and merciless eyes; under their mantles were long grey robes; upon their grey hairs were helms of silver; intheir haggard hands were swords of steel. Their eyes fell on him and pierced him., as they rushed toward him...The third was taller than the others: his hair was long and gleaming and on his helm it glowed with a pale light. he sprang forward and bore down Frodo..." NOTES: The Nazgul were nine human kings who were given the nine rings of power that were corrupted by Sauron. they became wraiths (Naz-ghul means "ring-wraith") who searched for the One Ring for their master. Their leader is the Witch-King of Angmar who is killed by Merry and Eowyn.

HISTORY: My favorite scene in the Ralph Bakshi cartoon ahd to be the scene below when the Black rider almost finds the hobbits hiding. The way it dragged its leg and sniffed was very creepy. In the Peter Jackson film it is when frodo faces them on Weathertop that you feel just how evil they are.
