NELLTHU (1955)

SOURCE: "Snulbug" by Anthony Boucher (The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, August 1955).

DESCRIPTION: "There was only one answer, and martin was gratified to observe that the coffee-bringing servant cast no shadow in the morning sun...'So, you are a demon.'" ("Nellthu" by Anthony Boucher)

NOTES: Nellthu looks human but is actually a powerful demon. He was raised by a plain-looking woman who wasted her first two wishes (Beauty and Wealth) but used her third wish to make Nellthu "...permanently and unselfishly in love with me." Consequently he gave her great beauty, talent, wealth and anything else she wanted. Fortunately for her human lovers she included the word "unselfishly".

HISTORY: Nellthu's name is slightly reminiscent of H. P. Lovecraft's "Cthulhu". See also "Snulbug".
