The tiny dragon hatches in Hagrid's hut

It wasn't exactly pretty; Harry thought it looked like a crumpled, black umbrella. NOTES: Norbert is a nasty pet, setting Hagrid's beard on fire and biting the students. Hagrid got the dragon egg in a swap at an inn where he was drinking. The person who gave him the dragon was Professor Quirrel under the influence of Voldemort.  Despite this Hagrid is taken with the little fellow. In the end he agrees to send him to Romania with Ron's brother, Charlie. In The Deadly Hallows, Charlie informs everyone that Norbert is actually 'Norberta', a female dragon.

HISTORY: Rowling uses this first novel to set up the fourth book, The Goblet of Fire, where Harry has to face a full-grown dragon.
