PENNY DREADFULS & GOTHICS
I've grouped these two different
but relted types of fiction together because they flourished at the same
time. The cheesy Gothics were published by semi-repspectable publishers
while Penny Bloods were cranked out by largely anonymous and virtually
illiterate businessmen. Many of the Penny dreafuls were bolderized versions
of popular Gothics. This period begins in 186- with Walpole's The Castle
of otranto and fades out into the Victorian era.
