"Red Shadows" by Robert E. Howard (1928) Originally appeared in Weird Tales, August 1928. Plot: Solomon kane comes upon a young woman who has been murdered by Le Loup, the bandit. he promises to find and kill the men responsible. Le Loup and his men are hiding in a cave. The majority of their group have been killed by a trap. They went to a hermit's cabin to take his gold but where blown up inside. Solomon Kane appears after dispatching the last of the men. The trap was of his making. He squares off with the Wolf but the bandit escapes by knocking over the table with the candle on it and slipping out a secret door. Kane follows him to Africa, slipping ashore where Le Loup has joined a tribe of locals. Kane gets knocked out as he finds the village. He wakes to find himself a prisoner of Le Loup who is secon-in-command next to the chief, Monsters: Gorilla - History: The first of the series to be published, it sets many of Kane's famous habits and such. Not the most supernatural of stories but Howard was happy with a gorilla or a snake at times.
Adapted in Marvel Premiere #33-34 (December 1976-February 1977) by Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin and again in The Sword of Solomon Kane #1 in a mini-series of 6(September 1985). This time the adaptation was done by Ralph Macchio and drawn by Steve Carr & Brett Blevins.
