SAURON (1954)
Sauron's material form in the Second Age
SOURCE: The two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954)
DESCRIPTION: "And suddenly he felt the Eye. There was an eye in the Dark Tower that did not sleep. He knew that it had become aware of his gaze. A fierce eager will was there. It leaped towards him; almost like a finger he felt it, searching for him. Very soon it would nail himdown, know just exactly where he was..." (The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien)
The Eye of Sauron in the Third Age
NOTES: Sauron is the ancient servant of the great evil Morgoth. He is called the 'Dark Lord' but his beginnings are more humble. In the second age his material form was destroyed in a great battle between the orcs and elves and men. Isildur kept the One Ring that Sauron had placed part of his soul into and he survived on in ghostly form. This is the shadowy eye that lives in the tower. His servants include the Orcs, the Goblins, the Trolls, the Crebain, the Naz-ghul, the Balrogs and the Mouth of Sauron. For more on his history try here: INTERESTING LINK.

HISTORY: The death of Sauron in the first Peter Jackson film was pretty exciting. Sauron swinging the giant mace was a neat effect. I always wondered why Tolkien named his two villains so similarly? Saruman and Sauron. Any good editor would tell you this will confuse readers. I imagine Tolkien did it for linguistic reasons, something entirely outside the story.
