A READER'S GUIDE TO SWORD & SORCERY COMICS 1950s

Different companies experimented with historical (Prince Valiant was hugely influential) and mythological (Sinbad and Samson being favorites) fantasy in the 1930-50s. Only the Spanish La Reina de la Costa Negra would use an established S&S character but have little influence in English-speaking countries. Artists who worked at this time would be around to try again later, such as Wally Wood, Gray Morrow and Joe Kubert. Gardner F. Fox who wrote the first S&S comic in English, "Crom the Barbarian" would later bring an S&S edge to superheroes like Hawkman.
