A READER'S GUIDE TO SWORD & SORCERY COMICS 1960s
The 1960s still saw many comics based on either history or mythology but the first true Sword & Sorcery comics in English began to appear as the Lancer Conan and The Lord of the Rings sold like hot-cakes in paperback. Alfred Alcala's "Voltar" (Conan seven years before Roy Thomas and Barry Smith), Elric and other experiments in fanzines, "Clawfang the Barbarian" and then the Warren horror/S&S strips in Creepy & Eerie all prepare the way for Marvel and the 1970s.
