A READER'S GUIDE TO SWORD & SORCERY COMICS 1970s

If the 1960s was the decade that saw the explosion of Sword & Sorcery books then it wasthe 1970s that saw a similar boom in the world of comics. More S&S title were published in the 1970s than any other decade. Fueled by the Lancer's Conan paperbacks of the 1960s, Sword & Sorcery was back and bigger than ever since the days of Robert E. Howard and Weird Tales.

Marvel dominated the field with Conan the Barbarian and related titles, but soon challengers came along. The rebel publishing company Atlas tried to steal Conan's thunder with Ironjaw. DC succeeded with REH/ERB crossblend in The Warlord though several other titles did not do as well. Gold Key had Dagar the Invincible. Even Warren experimented with the sub-genre in their horror magazine Eerie, with Dax. Marvel responded with more Howard titles Kull the Destroyer, Red Sonja (a Howard-roy Thomas hybrid) and Solomon Kane.
