"The Striking of the Gong" by Robert E. Howard (Circa 1928?)

A different version edited by Lin Carter originally appeared in King Kull 1967. The Howard alone first version appeared in The Second Book of Robert E. Howard May 1976.

Plot: Kull hears the striking of a gong and is transported to a dimension outside time and space where he meets a wizard. They ponder life and death before Kull returns to the land of living and only mere seconds have passed.

None.

History: This story reads like a trial run for "The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune" which also deals with esoteric thoughts on reality. This side of Howard's writing is best seen in the Kull stories. He drops such esoteric ideas when he moves onto Conan.

Savage Sword of Conan #23 (September 1979) adapted by Roy Thomas and drawn by Rich Hoberg and Bill Wray.
