THE TORKERTON GHOST (1929)
Marvin Kaye's reprint
anthology features Solomon Kane's encounter with the Torkerton ghost
SOURCE: "Skulls in the Stars" by Robert E. Howard (Weird Tales, January 1929)
DESCRIPTION: "Now a vague and grisly mouth gaped wide and the demoniac laughtr again shrieked out, soul-shaking in its nearness. And in the midst of that threat of doom, Kane deliberately leveled his long pistol and fired. A maniacal yell of rage and mockery answred the report and the thing came at him like a flying sheet of smoke, long shadowy arms stretched to drag him down." ("Skulls in the Stars" by Robert E. Howard)
NOTES: Gideon, the murdered cousin of Old Ezra the miser, haunts the swamp near Torkerton, tearing and biting to death any travellers he can. Only getting revenge on Ezra will lay it to rest.
HISTORY: An early Howard piece that sets up the Solomon Kane series. That Marvin Kaye cover is a swipe of a Frazetta painting.
