MOUNTAIN TROLL (1997)

After the trio defeat the troll
SOURCE: Harry Potter and the Philosophers' Stone by J. K. Rowling (1997) and sequels.
DESCRIPTION: "And then they heard it-- a low grunting and the shuffling footfalls of gigantic feet. Ron pointed: at the end of a passage to the left, something huge was moving towards them...It was a horrible sight. Twelve feet tall, its skin was a dull. granite grey, its great lumpy body like a boulder with its small bald head perched on top like a coconut. it had short legs thick as tree trunks with flat, horny feet. The smell coming from it was incredible. It was holding a huge wooden club, which dragged along the floor because its arms were so long." (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling)
NOTES: The troll is a stupid creature, probably from the Forbidden Forest, that is brought into Hogwarts to cause a diversion. It attacks Hermione Granger in the Girl's Lavatory and Harry and Ron save her, largely with dumb luck. Harry sticks his wand up its nose and Ron knocks it out with its own club and a levitation spell. In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Security trolls are hired to protect The Fat Lady portrait who guards the Gryffindor Tower from Sirius Black. "A bunch of surly security trolls had been hired to guard her. They paced the corridor in a menacing group, talking in grunts and comparing the size of their clubs." How these trolls are related to the Mountain Troll is not explained.
Yuck, Troll Boogies!
HISTORY: This scene is a favorite with readers of the book in 1997. The film version was less well-received because of the Cave Troll scene from The Fellowship of the Ring which was even more spectacular and released around the same time in theatres.
