UNICORNS (1997)

SOURCE: Harry Potter and the Philosophers' Stone by J. K. Rowling (1997) and sequels.

DESCRIPTION: "It was the unicorn alright, and it was dead. Harry had never seen anything so beautiful and sad. Its long slender legs were stuck out at odd angles where it had fallen and its mane was spread pearly-white on the dark leaves." (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling)

NOTES: The unicorns of the Forbidden Forest are not a large element in the novel, though they do supply the blood needed by Voldemort to survive. Anyone who drinks unicorn blood can live beyond their normal death but only in a cursed, half-life. In The Goblet of Fire Professor Grubbly-Plank takes Hagrid's class to see a unicorn, only allowing the girls to go near it. The unicorn is attracted to virginal females. Baby unicorns are gold in color. They don't mind boys as much as adults. The babies turn silver at two years of age, grow their horn at four, then go pure white at seven when they are fully matured.

HISTORY: The scene with the dead unicorn reminded me of the film Legend with Tom Cruise. Rowling's unicorn's horns don't flop side-to-side though.
