VAMPIRE DOGS (1954)
SOURCE: I Am Legend (1954) by Richard Matheson
DESCRIPTION: "...It was equally foolish to believe that they could transform themselves into wolves. Without a doubt there were vampire dogs; he had seen and heard them outside his house at night. But they were only dogs." (I Am Legend by Richard Matheson)
NOTES: Robert Neville makes a pet of one dog but it eventually succumbs to the vampire germ. He kills it the same way as the vampires outside his house. The bit of a vampire dog would have the same effect as a human vampire bite.
HISTORY: The vampire dogs never really make any appearance in the novel. The third movie version uses them quite a bit. The relationship Neville (Will Smith) has with his pet dog is a central emotional part of this film version, more so than any human relationships.
