WARGS (1937)
Frank Frazetta's Bilbo and Warg (1975)
SOURCE: The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (1937)
DESCRIPTION:"...Just at that moment the wolves trotted howling into the clearing. All of a sudden there were hundreds of eyes looking at them..." (The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien)
NOTES: Tolkien makes a distinction between wolves and wargs thusly: "But even the wild Wargs (for so the evil wolves over the Edge of the Wild are named) cannot climb trees." The Wargs have a language which they use to communicate with each other and with the goblins. They are led by a lead wolf and have a hierarchical system of leadership. Goblins will often use them as mounts.

Sketches and final product from Peter
Jackson's trilogy of films
HISTORY: Peter Jackson made the Wargs more like hyenas in The Lord of the Rings movies. They also seem less intelligent than the ones in The Hobbit.
