THE WATCHER IN THE LAKE (1954)

From the Peter Jackson film

SOURCE: The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954)

DESCRIPTION:"...The others swung round and saw the waters of the lake seething, as if a host of snakes were swimming up from the southern end. Out from the water a long sinuous tentacle had crawled; it was pale-green and luminous and wet. Its fingered end had hold of Frodo's foot, and was dragging him into the water..." (The Fellowship o the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien)

NOTES: The Watcher is an ancient creature that dwells in the lake outside the secret door to Moria. It is allied to Sauron. It killed Oin, Gimli's uncle and one of Bilbo's travelling companions.

HISTORY: Peter Jackson makes the watcher much more exciting in the film than it is in the book. The Ralph Bakshi animated film is closer to the actual version. Still, Jackson's version feels right and is fun to watch.
