"The White Beast" by Roger Zelazny (1979)

Originally appeared in Whispers 13 and 14, October 1979.

Plot: Dilvish and Black are travelling in the mountains. they are being followed by something wolfish. Dilvish finds a cave and waits to see who is coming. It is a werewolf. The beast is driven to kill and eat by its disease. Dilvish explains he is going to the Tower of ice. The werewolf leaves him for he thinks Dilvish is more damned than he is.

Monsters:

Werewolf - cursed beast who is so far gone he doesn't even wish to be cured just to eat.

History: This story appeared in a different form in Whispers, a horror magazine but Zelazny re-shaped it for the Dilvish saga. Unlike th stories from 1965-67, this one is not connected to previous material except that Dilvish seeks to find and kill Jelerak.
