THE WYVERNS OF ZEMBABWEI (1974)

SOURCE: "Red Moon of Zembabwei" by L. Sprague de Camp & Lin Carter (Fantastic, July 1974)

DESCRIPTION:"...Straight for them hurtled a black monstrosity, as big in the body as a lion, with a long, curved neck and a serpentlike head. Its elongated jaws showed rows of needle-sharp fangs, and its eyes burned like coals from hell." ("Red Moon of Zembabwei" by L. Sprague de Camp & Lin Carter)

NOTES: The wyverns are used by the Zembabwans as mounts and are kept in tall towers with no doors or windows, only open tops. One time in the story the wyverns are referred to as "pterodactyls" but I don't think they were intended to be dinosaurs. Their inspiration is rather ERBish though. The wyverns live in swamps, not on mountainsides as in the Boris illustration above.

HISTORY: This story was adapted in King Conan #3 by Roy Thomas, John Buscema andDan Bulanadi.
