"THE WHITE BEAST" (1979) by Roger Zelazny

SOURCE: "The White Beast" (Whispers, October 1979) by Roger Zelazny

DESCRIPTION: "All that day, as he crossed the ice field, the rider of the burnished black beast had known that he was pursued. He had glimpsed the great loping white form far back among the drifts...

PLOT: Dilvish, the Damned is riding in search of the Tower of Ice. During his journey a werewolf follows him. He takes refuge in a cave and waits for the creature. Dilvish is even willing to shares half of his food with the beast. Dilvish wants to kill Jelerak the sorcerer, who owns the the Tower of Ice. The werewolf once tried to do the same and became cursed. The werewolf realizes that Dilvish faces something even worse than himself and leaves.

WEREWOLF FACTS: The werewolf has much of his mental powers though the all-consuming hunger for food interrupts this frequently.

INTERESTING FACTS: Zelazny does some amazing things in this tale. First off, the series is a Fantasy series, but the story appeared in a horror magazine. He doesn't waste any time on describing the werewolf, knowing the reader knows what a werewolf is. This vague description actually makes the creature creepier. What Zelazny does describe is the mental anguish of the curse.
